Hampton & Richmond Borough 2-1 Welling United

Defeat at Hampton and Richmond Borough meant that Welling suffered back to back losses for the first time this season.

Chris Dickson, who started his career at Erith and Belvedere, scored a close range brace to ensure that Hampton enjoyed a league victory for just the second time since mid September.

Conditions were awful with heavy cold rain adding to an already sodden pitch but Hampton adapted better and claimed the points.

Neither goalkeeper made a save in the first half but Welling will be questioning why they weren’t awarded a penalty early on. There was a blatant handball in the penalty area but referee Jack Packman failed to award the spot kick. Play continued and Josh Hill’s shot was deflected onto the bar.

That was as close as Welling came in the first half and most of the best moments were created by Hampton debutant winger Liam Sole. One of his crosses found Jack Connors but his header back across goal flew the wrong side of the post.

However, his next involvement resulted in the opening goal on the stroke of half time. His low cross was not claimed by Dan Wilks and Dickson couldn’t miss from two yards out.

After a truncated half time rest, the Welling players were sent out early back into the icy weather to await the re-emergence of the Hampton team.

Soon after the start of the second period Welling registered their first attempt on target. A long free kick was flicked on by Matt Paterson and was met by Thierry Audel but his header lacked the power to trouble one time Welling goalkeeper Tom Lovelock.

Dickson had another chance for Hampton but his fierce shot was beaten out by Wilks. However, with seven second half minutes gone Hampton doubled their lead. Connors delivered a corner that found its way to Dickson who converted with a back-heel from inside the six yard box.

Another Dickson effort was saved as Welling struggled to get their game going.

Substitute Daniel Uchechi showed some trickery to create a shooting chance for himself but he fired just over from twenty yards.

Finally, Welling lifted the tempo and substitute Danny Mills proved to be a real handful for the Beavers’ defence. After Audel had a shot saved by Lovelock, Mills was set-up by Danny McNamara but his shot was saved at point-blank range by Lovelock.

There was nothing that the goalkeeper could do about Welling’s next chance. Hill toe-poked it through to Mills and he prodded it into the bottom corner.

Mills might have scored again moments later but his effort was deflected just past the post.

That proved to be Welling’s last chance and Dickson might have completed his hat-trick in injury time but his shot was too high.
