After a draining midweek trip to Devon, Welling United travel to Halifax in Yorkshire on Saturday.
On Tuesday, the Wings came away from Torquay United licking their wounds following a 3-0 defeat. Although there can be no doubt that the hosts deserved to win, the scoreline was a little flattering to them.
Welling looked to have weathered the storm leading up to the break, having conceded just once only for a very harsh penalty decision to be given against them. The Torquay players appeared as surprised as Welling’s but converted leaving the Wings with a mountain to climb.
They gave it a good go, and had two very good penalty shouts turned down. Loui Fazakerley hit the post and the Gulls goalkeeper, Martin Rice, was far busier than Welling’s Lee Butcher however the hosts did have opportunities and former Wing Toby Ajala added a third.
There were plenty of encouraging signs, however, and there were indications that Afolabi Obafemi and Tyrone Marsh are starting to understand the way each other plays having known each other for less than a week.
AFC Halifax have sold Lee Gregory, who scored a hat-trick against the Wings in last season’s corresponding fixture, but still look as if they could challenge this time around. They have started with two victories, 1-0 at Dover Athletic, and 3-1 v Southport with four different goalscorers.
