Following excellent results at Braintree and at home to Tamworth, Welling United head to Yorkshire on Saturday for the first time since November 2005.
Welling were defeated 4-1 by Huddersfield Town in the F.A. Cup on that day however they visit the town of Halifax in the Skrill Premier this weekend.
F.C. Halifax Town are placed 12th in the league almost entirely due to a home record of six wins and two draws and the game will present another tough challenge for Welling. The Wings won’t go into the game short on confidence, however, having only been beaten once in their last eight games which has pushed them into sixth place.
It was probably a good time for Welling to be without a midweek game after two bruising battles. Players carrying knocks will have the chance to rest them while those with longer term injuries have more time to recover. Jamie Day was outstanding last week against Braintree yet was able to leave himself out in favour of Jake Gallagher on Saturday.
He also has three outstanding centre halves tussling for two places. Baily Cargill has been a revelation in the first three games of his one month loan, Fraser Franks has enjoyed the form that earned him an England C cap, and Blaine Hudson was a rock at the back until his hamstring strain caused him to be sidelined.
Kiernan Hughes-Mason looks sharper with every minute he plays and when Harry Beautyman, Doug Bergqvist and Ross Lafayette all return to fitness, the manager will have a real headache when trying to select his best eleven.
Dan Gardner in midfield and Lee Gregory, for whom the Shaymen paid a significant fee to Mansfield, will need careful watching as they have both made their mark in the league. At the back, they have three ever-presents so have consistency there.
The last time Welling played a team from Halifax, it was the original Halifax Town’s last league game before their promotion back to the Football League in May 1998 and the Wings recorded a sensational 6-2 victory at Park View Road.
Day will hope that Welling’s loyal band of followers are in good voice at the Shay Stadium to cheer the team on to another good result.
