The biggest day in the history of the reformed Halifax will be witnessed by the nation on ITV on Sunday afternoon.
The Addicks faithful will still have that ignominious defeat at Northwich in 2009 in their minds and Chris Powell will treat his opponents with respect.
The Shayman have gone to town with the presentation of the match, producing commemorative tee shirts for the youngsters and are expecting a crowd of 4000-5000. Due to a combination of circumstances, the Addicks will be unlikely to have many more than 400 supporting them at the ground.
Powell will have to decide which players he wants to rest, which ones he wants to keep ticking over with next week’s game at Brentford in mind and how sharp the fringe players are. The last time the back-up squad saw any sort of action was in a private friendly with Millwall on 18 October so they will be a bit rusty.
John Sullivan is likely to get a rare start in goal with a couple of the regular back four ahead of him. Simon Francis’ departure to Bournemouth means that Chris Solly is likely to start. Andy Hughes can play at right-back but has been a regular in midfield of recent times. Under-18 skipper, Jordan Cousins, is another possibility but his call up to an England squad will probably rule him out.
If granted permission to play by Burnley, Leon Cort would have been a definite starter but he is away on international duty with Guyana. Gary Doherty will probably be paired with one of the regular central defenders. Matt Taylor is probably the more likely to start as Michael Morrison has picked up three yellow cards. Rhoys Wiggins, so impressive recently, may be given a rest with Cedric Evina coming in.
Danny Green is beginning to find form and Powell may want to keep that momentum going. One drawback is Green is one booking away from a suspension. If he picked up a yellow card at Halifax he would miss the Brentford game and a booking at Griffin Park would rule him out of the clash with Huddersfield.
Scott Wagstaff is the natural replacement and his energy could cause Halifax problems. Hughes, Hollands and Jackson are all likely to be rested though Hughes may feature on the bench. Mikel Alonso and Jason Euell are likely to be the central duo with Ruben Bover on the left. Green on the right and Wagstaff on the left is an option but Powell is not a fan of using players out of position. Youngster, Callum Harriott, may be in the manager’s thoughts but is more likely to be used at Bromley on Tuesday.
The two Pauls, Hayes and Benson, could be given the striking duties though Yann Kermorgant may be one of the seven subs.
Michael Smith or Adebayo Azeez will also be contenders for a place on the bench. Charlton could look something like this:
Sullivan; Solly, Taylor, Doherty, Evina; Wagstaff, Euell, Alonso, Bover; Hayes, Benson.
Subs: Hamer, Morrison, Wiggins, Hughes, Green, Kermorgant, Smith.
Geoff Eltringham from Tyne & Wear will be the referee,
Powell will be anxious to avoid an embarassing defeat whilst wanting to keep his squad fresh for the upcoming league fixtures. The tried and trusted formula of having the insurance of experienced campaigners on the bench may be the route he chooses.
Such is the confidence and momentum in the camp at present, the manager will feel that his team can do the job at the first time of asking. If they avoid defeat, Charlton will be number 25 in the second round draw.
