New signing Calum Haggett is focusing on one thing since signing for Kent and that’s forcing his way into the side.Calum Haggett

The 22 year old all-rounder signed for Kent last month having spent some time playing for the Second XI last season and after a recommendation by Simon Willis, the former Somerset man is now looking to impress Head Coach Jimmt Adams.

Haggett has featured in both of the warm up games against Hampshire and Surrey and will be in contention as Kent play their last warm up game against Cardiff MCCU beginning at Canterbury on Wednesday.

After having discovered he had a life threatening heart condition that forced him to withdraw from the England Under 19 World Cup squad back in 2010, Haggett went on to play three times for Somerset in the T20 and is hoping a fresh start at Kent will see him kickstart his cricketing career:

“I’ve been enjoying my time here and have been working hard in pre-season. I can’t wait for the season to start now.”

“I had a good finish to the end of last season and hopefully I can take that forward now.”

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself and I’ve got to continue working hard. It’s a decision for the captain and coach to make. I’ve just got to work hard on my game and see where that takes me.”

“When you get an opportunity, you’ve got to take it. If I do get an opportunity, I hope to take it. If not, I will keep working hard.”

When asked where he seems himself slotting into the Kent side, Haggett told KSN:

“I see myself as a bowler that can bat a bit, but I’d like to work on my batting as much as I can.”

“I’ve grown up admiring people like Glenn McGrath on the bowling front and on the batting front, anyone that was attacking.”

Haggett has been the only addition to the Kent squad over the winter as Jimmy Adams goes for continuity, but Haggett admitted he hadn’t been made to feel like the new boy and was thrilled with the way that everyone at the club has made him feel so welcome:

“Everyone’s been really welcoming and made it really easy to get on and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

“There are so many great guys here to talk to about cricket and I need to make sure I take in as much as possible.”

Kent are expected to field an experienced line up against Cardiff MCCU with Charlie Shreck having missed the first two pre-season games so far whilst on paternity leave.
