Guernsey v Cray Wanderers Preview
Guernsey v Cray Wanderers Preview

Another entry into the long and storied history of Cray Wanderers is added tonight as the Wands make their first ever trip to the Channel Islands to face Guernsey in the second game of the Ryman South season.

Guernsey

One of the games most anticipated by the supporters has come perhaps a little too early for many but those making the journey tomorrow by air or sea will be witnessing a unique occasion.

Cray began the season on Saturday with a somewhat fortuitous point against Sittingbourne with two goals in the dying moments capping a thrilling game which ended 3-3.

Despite maybe not being at their best, the players showed a lot of resilience and fortitude to come back so late and is perhaps a sign of a good side that can perhaps not play as well as they should and still have enough to pinch a point.

Looking at the positives from Saturday, Solomon Taiwo looked strong in midfield and had a good game, also Joel Ledgister scored a good goal on his league debut.

Cray

However, Cray supporters would have enjoyed a brief substitute appearance from Max Williams, again making his league debut who helped get Cray back on their feet and his busy display earned a first league goal and helped set up a grandstand finish.

Sean Roberts who had a tremendous pre-season carried on that form into Saturday and from his overall performance deserved to be the player to save the day deep into stoppage time.

Defensively, Cray were maybe not at their best but it was the first game and it has to be said that Sittingbourne played well.

Perhaps a reminder that there will be games when things will not always go smoothly and there are some very well organised sides in the Ryman South who won’t make it easy for Cray.

Tomorrow’s opponents Guernsey started their season with a 1-2 defeat at Ramsgate so will be looking to bounce back.   Tony Vance’s side are often included in the pre-season favourites for promotion and you feel their home form will be a key factor in whether they can achieve this.

Ramsgate’s winner came two minutes from time and they felt a little hard done by not to come back home with a point.

It will undoubtedly be a tricky game for the Wands in front of a big crowd and Cray will have to be at their very best to come away with the three points.
