Grimsby Town 3-1 Welling United

Travelling for the seventh weekend in a row, Welling United tumbled to defeat at Grimsby Town.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

The match was defined in the first chaotic eleven minutes when three goals were scored.

Sam Corne stunned the hosts in the sixth minute when getting in front of the Mariners’ back four to head home Ben Jefford’s teasing cross.

However, within a minute, the hosts were level. Nathan Arnold made a complete hash of a shot and it skewed to the far post allowing Padraig Amond to volley home unopposed.

After eleven minutes, Welling found themselves behind. Grimsby were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and Connor Townsend’s delivery gave Tom King no chance in the Welling goal.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Josh Gowling headed over for Grimsby and Michael Bakare did likewise at the other end before Alex Jones fed on a half cleared free kick but could not keep his shot down.

Soon after the break, Bakare was unable to keep another effort down and a George Porter effort was also too high after he had taken over from a Harry Lee break.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Richard Tait had a shot that King pushed out and Craig Clay went wide from a shot from distance.

Although Welling played some good football, they did not create any clear cut chances and King had to be alert once more to save from substitute Jack Mackreth.

Mackreth had the last word, however, when finishing in the final minute of injury time when Welling, searching for an equaliser, were caught short handed at the back.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

It was the first time this season that Welling had conceded three and the final scoreline gave a harsh reflection on a closely fought game.
