Greenwich Borough withdraw from the SCEFL

It’s always disappointing to see a football club in disarray, and all the more so when when it is a club in the Kent F.A. catchment area.

Greenwich Borough have made an announcement stating  “Due to the severe business interruption, Greenwich Borough FC will not be participating in the league from today. We are not closing the business but just withdrawing from the competition. The club are not leaving for financial issues.”

Although they are not stating that they will cease to exist, it’s hard to see how the club that was formed in 1928 as Woolwich Borough Council Athletic Club can continue. Their cause has not been helped by the fact that they have not had a ground to call their own since 2009. They have set up home with ground shares at Holmesdale, Dartford, Cray Valley Paper Mills, where they were evicted at the end of last season, and Phoenix Sports.

Before last season when they finished rock bottom and were relegated from the Isthmian League, they had twice contested the promotion play-offs, being knocked out by Corinthian-Casuals on both occasions.

Resigning from a league in mid-season is not ideal and the table will be reshuffled when taking their results out with winners and losers.

They were languishing at the foot of the table and the three teams that they have beaten, K Sports, Canterbury City and Welling Town will benefit but if promotion is decided on goal difference, Sheppey United will lose out as their ten-nil victory will now count for nothing. Erith Town will also suffer, losing six points, having already completed the double over them.

Some famous names have represented the Borough over the years, the most well known probably being Ian Wright. He started his adult football career with the Borough before moving to Crystal Palace and Arsenal. He also won thirty England caps and is now a TV pundit.

However, as much as the supporters of those clubs will be disappointed, it will pale into insignificance when compared to the pain being suffered by followers of Greenwich Borough.
