Greenwich Borough dominated both possession and chances this afternoon but were hit by a late sucker-punch by league leaders Lewes and had to settle for a point in this top of the league encounter.
The home sides’ unbeaten run extended to three games although today’s draw means Greenwich, despite remaining fifth in the table, are now five games without a win.
The hosts were the better side throughout although will look back on the game ruing how they perhaps didn’t test The Rooks’ ‘keeper Christopher Winterton enough despite that dominance.
The early signs were positive as Charlie MacDonald and Jack Barham linked up well and as the striker ran through on goal Winterton was alert and off his line quickly to clear the danger.
Barham showed his eye for goal and confidence furthermore picking up on a loose ball inside the penalty area and, despite having his back to goal, turned and struck the ball goal-ward but saw his effort strike the side-netting.
Barham then linked up well with Ryan King-Elliott on the right-hand side with MacDonald on the end of it in front of goal but saw his header well saved by Winterton.
Lewes, perhaps buoyed by still being in the game despite being on the back-foot, began to gain more possession and composure but without being able to break down the home sides back line and penetrate the final third – George Kamurasi remained a passenger for long periods with barely a thing to do.
Greenwich’s patience and tenacity eventually shone through as the home side took a quick free kick and with the visitors caught on the back foot debutant Chinedu McKenzie lashed the ball home – The striker signing only 24hrs before this fixture.
The game continued in the same vein as the hosts continued to put their visitors under pressure, continuing to repel the league leaders’ efforts to get back into the game – The game also began to break up as both sides made changes however the changes were soon to make a significant impact upon the final outcome of this fixture.
The visitors’ frustration also threatened to spill over resulting in the referee ordering Darren Freeman from the touchline.
The Lewes manager though was able to see his changes win his side a point as substitute George Landais poked home from close range at the back post – Fellow substitute Jonte Smith and Ronnie Conlon working well on the left and William Medlock’s header across goal finding the goalscorer.
Landais had only been on the pitch for three minutes.
For the remainder of the game the tone suddenly changed as Greenwich, without a win in four games, were dragged back into their defensive third and were hanging on as Lewes put their hosts under pressure and scrutiny.
Greenwich held firm and with one final flurry in their own penalty area and the referee stopping play and awarding a drop-ball the game was brought to an end with both sides taking a share of the spoils.
The two sides remain top and fifth respectively after this result and despite those final few minutes the visitors and league leaders will no doubt have been the happier to take a point.
