Ian Jenkins’ first game in charge of Greenwich Borough ended in disappointment as they lost out to Erith Town, managed by his former Cray player Mark Tompkins, whose fine second half display was worthy of the three points.
The former Cray boss signed five new players this week and there were some familiar faces in the side from his days at Hayes Lane inluding Aaron Day, Joe Vines and Danny Young.
Boro started the game well with their powerful forward line of Stuart Zanone and Jeff Duah-Kessie causing Erith problems.
Billy Manners headed wide and Duah-Kessie was denied by Clark in the visitors goal as the home side pressed. Erith’s defence held out well though and occassionaly they threatened on the break with their pacey winger Conrad.
As the half went on the game got more physical with several late tackles on both sides, but Referee Idris did well to control things. In the last minute of the half Luke May missed a great chance for the home side shooting wide when well placed.
The second half saw Erith come out looking like a different team and despite and early miss from Zanone it was the visitors who now asked the attacking questions.
Mark Tompkins’ side pressed high and pushed forward at every opportunity Akers hit a free kick just over after good work by Ben Yiadom and Vines made a fine tackle to deny Aaron Jeffrey when he was bearing down on goal.
With the pace of the game even more frantic and both sides making light of the heavy pitch, Conrad set up Yiadom with a great cross that, but his header was palmed away by Jack Kelly.
A series of corner followed with Kelly saving from Joe Nwoko before finally on 74mins Dave Waters headed a corner towards goal and Nwoko flicked the ball home from close range.
Borough finally got going again after falling behind Zanone had an effort blocked, Young and Vines headed chances over from corners and Bent was denied by Clark.
Erith battled on and despite one late scare when Vines once again heading over, but The Dockers deserved the win for their sheer hard work and commitment.
