Mark Gower agreed a one-year deal at The Valley, Charlton Athletic announced on Monday afternoon.
A former Tottenham youngster, Gower has spent the bulk of his career at Southend and Swansea. The classy midfielder was instrumental in Swansea’s rise to the Premier League but his opportunities were limited under new Swans boss, Michael Laudrup, last season.
34-year-old Gower spent the last few weeks of the season at Charlton and his permanent signing for the club had been widely anticipated.
An experienced player, Gower will bring a calm and cultured presence to the Addicks midfield. He was thought to be close to joining Charlton last summer.
Chris Powell had this to say about his new signing:
“Mark is a player who came in towards the end of last season and, after initially having to wait for his chance, made a real impact in the final few games.
“He offers us good experience in the middle of the park, is a good user of the ball and has played in the Premier League with Swansea.
“He is a player I have had my eye on for a while, even before he joined us on loan, and he adds to the competition for places in midfield.
“Along with the likes of Andy Hughes, who signed a new contract last week, he is another good character and I’m very glad to have him on board for next season.”
