The Addicks are closing in on a loan move for experienced Swansea midfielder, Mark Gower.Mark Gower

Gower has been a long term target for Chris Powell and was close to a move to The Valley in the summer.

The 34-year-old hails from Edmonton ,so would have no problems playing for a London based club. He started his career at Tottenham but failed to make a league appearance during his time at White Hart Lane. Gower made 9 appearances whilst on loan at Motherwell before he switched to Barnet.

He appeared 14 times for the Underhill outfit, then moved to Southend. A successful five year spell at Roots Hall saw Mark score 35 goals in 203 appearances before he attracted the attention of Swansea. He is now in his fifth season at the Liberty Stadium and has made 127 apearances for the Swans, including 20 in the Premier League last season. Gower has become a peripheral figure this season but would be a real asset to Charlton.

Powell has said that the club can only bring players in when others are moved on so Gower’s arrival would be something of a change of policy. With two of the bottom three having a game in hand on the Addicks, the move is possibly  a safety measure to prevent the club being dragged into a relegation dog fight.

Gower is a vocal player on the pitch and will help organise the team during matches. His contract runs out in the summer so a permanent deal could be a possibility for next season. Gower is expected to sign in time to make the trip to Huddersfield.
