The rumours that Joe Gomez was Anfield bound gathered pace over the weekend.
On Monday afternoon, Sky Sports News reported that Liverpool were in discussions with the Addicks over Gomez, but had made no official bid.
It now seems that Gomez will sign for Liverpool in the next few days, unless Arsenal or Manchester City make a late move to hijack the deal.
The initial fee is likely to be around £6,000,000 but add ons could raise the initial fee substantially.
Glen Johnson will leave Anfield during the summer, so there could be an early opportunity for Gomez, albeit that the youngster would prefer to play in central defence, rather than on the right.
Brendan Rodgers is a manager who is not afraid to play his youngsters, but if the Reds get off to a sluggish start, Rodgers’ future could be in doubt.
Gomez, like Diego Poyet a year ago, would benefit from getting a full season’s experience in the Championship.
Liverpool may think a season in the Second Tier would aid Gomez’s development and loan him out for the season.
Any such move is unlikely to happen until after the Premier League clubs lodge the names of their 25 man squads on 31 August.
Though Charlton would be Gomez’s obvious destination, it is far from certain that The Valley would be his destination.
Andre Wisdom was a youngster that Liverpool wanted to have Championship experience a while back, and the Mersysiders loaned him to Derby.
It would be no surprise if Gomez spent a year at the i-Pro.
Gomez is now following Liverpool on Twitter, so all the signs are that the young defender will shortly be heading north.
