Coming into their game with Braintree Town, Welling United had failed to score in their previous five league games but had only conceded three.

Therefore, few would have expected what they were about to witness. The Wings were four up in less than thirty minutes on their way to a six-two victory. Welling manager Mark Goldberg said “I thought (for) the first thirty-five minutes we were magnificent. We pressed them. We didn’t let them breathe. We took control of the midfield. We put crosses in the box.

“We had three or four shots on goal before we even scored. Everything that we asked of them, they did, We were up for it. I thought that we deserved at that stage to be up by three goals but then at thirty-five minutes, for some reason, we got a little bit casual. We took our foot off the pedal and we let them back into the game. The last ten minutes, we only have ourselves to blame for slackening off.”

Goldberg continued “The goal, I think, that they did score woke us up a bit and we came out (in) the second half stronger again. All in all, I’m absolutely delighted with the boys and considering we had to play with ten men for as long as we did, it was nerve-racking, still, for me because of the position we’re in and you can never be complacent, even with a gap of three goals, but we got the job done and in the end it was well deserved.”

Theo Widdrington played just behind central striker Korrey Henry and Goldberg explained “Against Chippenham and against Dulwich he’s come on for the last twenty-five minutes and he’s come on in that hole, that number ten role, and he’s done quite well.

“With Brad (Goldberg) not really being fit enough to start, we thought that we’d play Theo to start the game the way we finished off against Dulwich and I was really pleased with Theo today. He got the goal. He worked really hard, tirelessly, and he got closer to Korrey.

“I think the difference is that Cookie (Anthony Cook) when he played in that ten, he was doing his defensive work brilliantly but he wasn’t getting beyond Korrey or getting close to him, but Theo did and it worked today.”

Henry scored four times in the game and Goldberg wasn’t surprised. “I felt that it’s been coming.” he said. “You can see what a quality player he is going to be and I think when he’s been on loan before, it’s taken him two or three games to get going so let’s hope that we can keep him for a while.”

Goldberg expanded on that by confirming that his original loan period will expire if parent club Bromley do not allow him to become cup-tied in the F.A. Trophy. He confirmed “I need to lean on Bromley and see where they are and obviously the player needs to want to stay but I think that he would like to stay.

“We’ve got the St Albans cup (Trophy) game next week and I’m not sure whether he’s available or not for the cup and we need to, hopefully, get some favours from Bromley.”

One downside in the game was the red card shown to Sanchez Ming. Goldberg said “From what I understand, he got involved when he didn’t really need to and he pushed their player in the neck from what I was told by the referee. He’s apologised in the changing room. He’s got his own punishment but he’s also punishing his team-mates so that, he’s going to have to take on board.”
