Welling United cruised to victory over Chipstead in the F.A. Cup and manager Mark Goldberg could not have been happier.
“(I’m) very pleased that we’re in the hat for the next round.” he said. “It didn’t matter how we won today to be honest. We said to the lads ‘if it had to be ugly, it would be ugly’. We knew that they would come here to try and intimidate us. We didn’t allow them to bring their game plan on us. We were determined to squeeze and to press and to make sure that we dominated the middle of the park.
The early goal from Coombsie obviously helps and takes a bit of the pressure off and then we can start playing with a bit more confidence and then one goal came after the other. I’m really pleased with the lads because they didn’t take them lightly today.”
During the previous week, Welling re-signed Danny Waldren from Billericay Town and Goldberg was delighted with his immediate mark with a goal. He said “We haven’t been very good with set pieces going forward in terms of being clinical and today we scored from a corner which was great.
“Then a free kick from outside the box. We’ve not been scoring and Jack Jebb does what he does best. Briiliant.”
Continuing on the signing of Waldren, Goldberg continued “I’d like to think that the supporters here see that he always wore his heart on his sleeve while playing for Welling. He feels like he’s back home. For me, to have that combination of steel, ability and (danger at) set pieces, good possession on the ball and he’s a leader. He’s already had an impact since he’s come in on Thursday in training.”
His introduction meant that Montel Agyemang lost his place in the team after having been one of the star performers seven days earlier. Goldberg explained “I spoke with Montel on Thursday night and the reality is you don’t just pick a player because he’s played well the previous week.
“We knew that with set pieces we could be dangerous today so Danny Waldren would be a better option. As a manager, I’ve got to play the best team for that particular game and I said to him if we wanted to see a game out he’d be the one that I’d bring on to see the game out.”
He made one other change to the starting line up from the previous game, bringing in Connor Dymond at right back and leaving out Jay Rich-Baghuelou. “I wanted to go with experience, with no disrespect to Jay, he’s young and he’s capable of making mistakes at the moment in the early part of his career. I can’t take any risks.
“But also, I wanted my players on the pitch that wore that Welling badge, that winning for the team today, and winning in the F.A, Cup, was more important than where it might help them as an individual for the future. We have no doubts that Jay’s here as a transition period to learn and then to move on whereas the likes of Connor and the players that I chose today are players that don’t want to move on, are players that want Welling to win in the F.A. Cup. I thought that Connor did really well. I was really pleased with him.”
Goldberg continued “Today we had our leaders on the pitch. We had Connor. We had Rob Swaine, Danny Waldren, Cookie (Anthony Cook) to a certain extent. We’ve got players who really care and wanted to win and I’m so delighted today.”
