Goldberg disappointed with point
Goldberg disappointed with point

Going to Chelmsford City is never and easy challenge but Welling United manager Mark Goldberg came away disappointed that his side only claimed a point.

Speaking after the game he said “It’s very disappointing to be a goal up with two minutes to go and we were very capable of seeing the game out. Just a lack of concentration and doing the wrong thing there. They created a chance for themselves. I think they got a little bit lucky as well. It kind of ricocheted back to a player that looked offside to me but apparently someone was keeping him on according to the referee.

It feels like you’ve dropped points today and yet I suppose to come away from Chelmsford and get a point, it’s normally a satisfactory result but it doesn’t feel like one today.”

Goldberg continued “We still had another opportunity and I think all in all we probably created more opportunities than they did so we’ve got to be quite proud of ourselves that we’ve come here and given a good account of ourselves.

“Everybody will see that everybody gave one hundred percent out there and it was a blistering hot day but no-one shirked their responsibility. I’m pleased with the boys but just disappointed that we didn’t get all three points.

Just before half time, Connor Dymond was carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Goldberg explained “He has been so unlucky with injuries and now his shoulder has popped out. Although it popped back in again, I’m very fearful of how long these injuries can take. It’s quite a serious injury. We’ll have to assess it and see where we are.”

Dymond’s injury gave Reece Prestedge a debut opportunity. Goldberg said “Reece came in and did a job. It’s what he’s there for. He’s capable of doing it but it’s still a massive disappointment to lose Connor.”

Prestedge had to come in to play alongside Montel Agyemang who was making his first appearance of the season. That was due to the absence of Luke Rooney. Goldberg explained “He had an injury on a coaching course during the week and his shoulder’s not right yet. I don’t think it’s a long term injury.

“He could be back next week but Montel stepped in and he’s earned the right to have his start anyway and we’ve always said to Montel that if you could just learn to do the other side of the game. We said that to Jebby (Jack Jebb) last year and he learned the other side of the game and look how well he did.

“Montel showed that he’s prepared to commit on the other side to make sure that he wins the battles and he reads the game defensively. Today he was back in our own penalty area with saving challenges and interceptions. We know what he can do on the ball and he got us popping the ball around so I was very pleased with Montel. I thought he did very well today.”

Speaking of Jebb’s latest injury, Goldberg sighed “Jack finished training on Thursday night absolutely perfectly. He was fit and really happen and this morning he wakes up with a glute (gluteal muscle) issue so it’s just one problem after another. It’s very disappointing for him. It’s very disappointing for us.”

Overall, Goldberg is happy with the team’s progress. “We are believing in ourselves a little bit more. We are playing better football. The opportunities are coming and if we’d got all three points today it would have been a really perfect day.”
