Another defeat for Welling United has left them above the bottom two on goal difference only and may turn out to be Mark Goldberg’s last league game as manager.
After the match, Goldberg admitted that things have not worked out as he hoped when taking the reins back as manager, and that he is looking at alternative options. “I’m looking to do something new, management wise, bring somebody else in.” he said. “It’s quite obvious that it’s not working.
“I’m not getting the response from the players that I wanted and a change sometimes makes a difference. At this time where we are in the league, it has to make a difference so I’ll do what I need to do this week. I’ve already started the interview process, while I was away, and we’ll bring somebody in as soon as I can. Our budget is such that I’m talking to an experienced manager but I’m also talking to a very experienced head coach.”
Goldberg continued “Both options are open to me at the moment. I think that when there’s a change of personnel in the changing room it can really lift the players, just a change on the training ground. Also, it’s not just this club. It happens at so many clubs where managers leave and new managers come in. It ignites the dressing room. There’s good foundations. The players aren’t poor players.”
As far as the game against Weymouth was concerned, Goldberg said “Very disappointed that we didn’t get anything out of the game. I understand the discord but our team deserved more out of the game than what we got. It wasn’t a three one.
“The penalty decision killed us.” he said. “Was it necessary for Rob (Swaine) to dive in? I don’t think so. That last goal (in injury time at two-one down) I went gung ho. I sent Nathan (Green) up the pitch.”
Weymouth’s first goal was scored just before half time. Welling had a couple of chances to clear it but Goldberg felt that it shouldn’t have got that far. “We had words about that.” he said. “First of all Dipo (Akinyemi) should have done a lot better in holding it up. It was given away far too cheaply. Then we had chances to clear it.”
One player who was absent was Chiori Johnson. “Chiori was up ill all night last night.” Goldberg explained. “I went four four two, back to basics, get the ball up to the front two then try and hold it up there.
“They worked hard, the boys. I’ve not been at the last three games but from what I saw from today, I don’t think that you can fault the effort of the players.”
