Gloucester City v Welling United – Preview

For the third league game in a row, Welling United face a club from the West Country in the Vanarama National South.

Their four-nil victory against Chippenham Town was followed by a very professional 2-0 win at Weston-super-Mare.

On Saturday they prepare to go to Gloucester City who play their home games in Evesham. Until last season, the Tigers were playing their home games at Cheltenham in the Vanarama National North but they were switched to the South division in the summer and also moved grounds.

They enjoyed a four match winning streak earlier in the season but are winless in the last six league and cup games and have not won on home soil since August Bank Holiday Monday.

In an attempt to arrest the run they have brought in Charlie Ten-Grotenhuis on a youth loan from Bristol Rovers. As long as the paperwork is completed on time, he will be in contention on Saturday to replace Ross Finnie whose loan has expired and he has returned to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

While Gloucester have been struggling to get a victory, Welling have been in great form. In the league they are unbeaten in seven, have lost just one in twelve, and have won their last five, four with clean sheets.

Another good sign is that the goals have been shared around. At Weston, Eli Phipps returned to the starting line up and opened the scoring then Joe Healy got on the end of a Jeffrey Monakana cross to notch a second.

Manager Jamie Coyle will have some difficult decisions to make. He missed the game last Saturday and Ian Gayle had an excellent game in his place. Tom Bradbrook and Christian Nanetti were both absent so Phipps and Christie Pattisson came in and staked their claim for a starting place.

Now he has to decide whether to ignore the old maxim of ‘never change a winning team’. He will have difficult decisions to make, but ones of the type that managers would want.
