Glebe picked up a win that moved them into tenth place with a comprehensive victory over Canterbury City at Foxbury Avenue on Saturday afternoon, with Marcel McDonald scoring a first half hatrick.
After an open start t the game Glebe started to dominate the play with long spells of possession, although Canterbury did go close when Travers’ downward header from a corner bounced up and over the bar.
The City offside trap frustrated the home side right up until the half hour mark when McDonald broke clear and took the ball round Kidman before rolling it into the net to make it 1-0.
From there it was constant Glebe pressure and they went 2-0 up on 40 minutes when Snelling and Philpot combined down the right to set up McDonald who converted from close range.
McDonald then set up Craig whose shot was saved by Kidman, but just before the half time they did make it three when a ball down the right saw Gillies play in McDonald and he drove the ball home for 3-0.
The second half started with Glebe attacking down the slope, Snelling went close before a slick passing move saw them make it 4-0 with Gillies, McDonald, Philpot and Gamble linking up to play in Dyer to score.
A minute later it was five, when Dyer showed some great footwork out wide and crossed for Philpot to head powerfully home.
Two minutes later Philpot played in Craig who took the ball round Kidman and coolly slotted home for 6-0.
Canterbury rallied briefly from there, but Glebe made it 7-0 on 67 minutes when Dyer had a shot saved by Kidman, but Gamble was on hand to convert the lose ball into an empty net.
City centre back Travers had a header tipped over by Crump and from the corner he headed wide as Canterbury tried to battle back, but it was 8-0 on 74 minutes when a long ball over the top found Philpot who raced clear and finished superbly from the edge of the area into the corner of the net.
Canterbury had a goal ruled out for offside, which just about summed up their afternoon, while Glebe went close when Dyer had a shot saved and then Holland was just off target with a free kick.
A late rally from Canterbury, who never gave up, saw Snelling make a good tackle to deny Aydin in the box, but from the corner they did pull one back when Glebe failed to clear the ball after a goalmouth scramble and Arnold converted from close range in off the post in the final minute.
Glebe will hope this impressive win can kick start their league campaign, while Canterbury must now regroup as they look to move out of the relegation places.
