Glebe 3-1 Westside

Charlie Penny scored a brace as Glebe defeated Westside to progress to the semi-final of the SCEFL Challenge Cup.

Despite the miserable weather conditions, both teams tried to play football and they put on an entertaining evening’s football.

Visitors, Westside, might be playing in a league below Glebe but they were not overawed and stunned the promotion chasing hosts by going ahead in the fifth minute. They worked it well to Tevon Webster and he laid it back for Darlush Heravi to slot it home.

Penny came close to levelling but his header was cleared off the line by Alex Lever. However, midway through the first half parity was restored. Ryan King-Elliott twisted the Westside defence inside out before sliding it across for Penny to slot home.

The Foxes continued to play the ball around and went ahead nine minutes before the break. Although King-Elliott’s effort was cleared off the line, Penny was on hand to force it home.

After the half time interval, Penny blasted a free kick well over before he sent Ainsley Everett through down the inside left channel but his well struck shot was beaten out by Charlie Payne. Matthew Parsons overlapped and crossed for King-Elliott but his shot went just wide.

It was not all one way, though, and Webster found Heravi but his shot was cleared off the line by Dami Olorunnisomo then Luke Fenlon shot wide from a deep corner.

Everett had a chance to make it three from the spot when Penny was fouled in the penalty area but he fired over. However, four minutes later, Glebe scored the crucial third. Olorunnisomo crossed and King-Elliott showed great technique to volley home.

There was a response from Westside when Glebe over-played the playing out from the back and Louie Stanton-Cockle nicked it away and found Heravi. His clever chip beat George Kanurasi but came back out off the bar.

Although Troy Silvera had a shot deflected wide, there was no further threat of a come-back and Glebe saw out the match in comfort.
