On a lush playing surface, Glebe showed their credentials with a solid performance against Welling United.
They went ahead with their first real attack of the match when Jesse Darko was sent clear and he gave Dan Wilks no chance with a delightful lob.
Nick Blue, goalkeeper in Cray Wanderers League Championship side last season, made a good save from a Welling trialist before Jack Harris came close for Glebe with a shot into the side netting.
Sam Edwards curled a free kick wide for Glebe and jack Jebb did likewise at the other end before Edwards sent another one into the shrubbery outside the ground.
Julien Anau went on a great run for Welling but then scuffed his shot allowing Blue to pick it up and the vistors paid for it when conceding a second just before the break. They were caught sleeping when a free kick was tapped to Stacy Long and he took full advantage when firing low into the bottom corner.
There was still time for Luke Rooney to fire a free kick into the Glebe wall before Jebb picked out Anau with a corner but he headed wide.
It might have been three shortly after the break but Wilks did well to keep out Harris when he looked certain to score.
Aaron Cosgrove went on a brilliant run beating several Glebe defenders but his shot flew into the side netting before Welling did pull one back. Reece Prestedge was sent clear and he finished with an excellent chip.
Welling manager Mark Goldberg brought on some academy players for their first taste of first team action and they looked tidy but it was Glebe that scored late on to guarantee victory. Harris was deemed to have been fouled in the penalty area, and although Wilks went the right way, he was unable to keep out Edwards’ spot kick.
