Despite a stirring second half comeback, Glebe were knocked out of the London Senior Cup by Hanwell Town.
When step three Hanwell went in at half time three goals ahead, it looked all over but the hosts, from two levels lower, pulled back two and piled on the pressure before being caught by a late strike on the counter attack.
It took just four minutes for the visitors to go ahead when a low free kick by Ryan Case was cleared as far as Chris Regis. Although he scuffed his shot, Ezekiel Coker’s clever flick-hook went just inside the post.
Veteran Elliot Benyon’s effort was saved comfortably by Foxes goalkeeper Justin Lee before Hanwell doubled their lead midway through the first period. A deep free kick was headed out as far as Nathanael Boayke and he fired home from twenty yards.
Five minutes later, the Toon went three up when Boayke was tripped in the penalty area and Coker sent Lee the wrong way from the spot.
Fred Obasa chased a Jamie Philpot flick on but the referee had blown his whistle long before he slotted it home. Philpot then had a chance of his own with a first time effort from Dayo Santanna’s low cross but it flashed wide of the near post. Another half chance came and went for the Foxes when Daniel Vaughan’s shot fizzed over from Paul Lee’s cut back.
Regis should have been flagged for offside but was allowed to race away and cross to Benyon at the far post. His header was saved brilliantly by Lee only for Coker to bundle home however, he was flagged for offside.
There was still time for Hanwell to have one last chance in the first half but Emerson Sutton blazed well off target.
After the break, Toon goalkeeper Sam Beasant read the danger well and made an excellent save to deny Obasa who had beaten the visitors’ back line before Leo Donnellan slung in a diagonal free kick just beyond two of his Hanwell team-mates at the far post.
Philpot then sprung the Toon’s offside trap and burst away but Beasant again timed his intervention to perfection giving the Glebe striker no room in his attempt to clip it over him.
Harry Seabrook headed wide at the far post from a Donnellan corner before Glebe’s Dayo Santanna pulled it back to Kiye Martin but he was at full stretch and was unable to hit the target with his volley.
As Glebe ramped up the pressure, the visitors’ defenders had to put their bodies on the line. Philpot had a shot blocked bravely by Kyron Richards and Femi Ogunbiyi’s follow up was charged out by Case at the cost of a corner. Although the first corner was cleared at the expense of another, the Foxes pulled one back from the second.
Red Jenkins was hauled down in the area but play continued and Beasant made a brilliant save from Philpot. However, it came straight back out to the Foxes’ all time leading scorer and he made no mistake with his follow up header.
Now with their tails up, Glebe continued to ask questions and Rudi Pache was relieved to see his deflection of Obasa’s shot fly just outside the near post with Beasant committed to diving towards the far post.
Sutton shot beyond the far post after Glebe lost possession with a sloppy pass but they pulled another one back with fifteen minutes remaining. Zak Loveridge burst into the penalty area and was tripped by Richards. Philpot stepped up and although Beasant went the right way, the conversion was accurate and powerful enough to find the corner.
Kelvin Bakare had a shot blocked before he met another Loveridge corner with a header that looped over Beasant but landed on the roof of the net.
As Glebe continued to press, they left themselves short at the back, and Hanwell made sure of the victory six minutes from the end when they found themselves four v two. Three substitutes combined when Alfie Pendlebury found Jordan Edwards who set up Kameron English to sweep home.
Pendlebury might have added his name to the scoresheet when spotting goalkeeper Lee off his line and shooting just over from forty-five yards, then in injury time another shot of his was kept out by a last gasp block by Paul Lee.
Had either of those gone in, it would have been harsh on Glebe who gave an excellent account of themselves in an entertaining and honest match well officiated by referee Morgan Conn.
