Danny Gannon’s terrible injury overshadowed anything else that happened when Glebe entertained Erith Town.
Sixty seven minutes were on the clock when Gannon burst into the penalty area and nicked it past the out-rushing Dean Nash. The Glebe goalkeeper clattered into the Dockers’ striker and left him in a heap.
Although a stretcher was called for, it soon became clear that Gannon could not be moved. By the time the ambulance had arrived, pain relief had been administered, and the emergency vehicle had departed, an hour had passed.
Before all this happened, the two teams had put on some enthralling fare with both struggling to defend dead ball deliveries. Jack Hooper had the first chance for Erith but fired over after a free kick had been half cleared.
Andrew Griffiths then burst through for Glebe but Lewis Scotter did well to get back to block.
After scoring four for Glebe on Saturday, Laurent Hamici was full of confidence but snatched at his shot and went wide at the near post. At the other end Dan Palfrey hit a free kick that Nash saved at the second attempt. Nash then saved from an over-hit free kick from Erith goalkeeper Adam Molloy.
Myles Keizer-Burrows headed wide from a deep corner before the Dockers went ahead. Andres Tobon crossed and Gannon met with a crisp first time volley that gave Nash no chance.
Within seven minutes, Glebe were level. A foul on the edge of the area gave Peter Sweeney the opportunity to have a go from twenty yards and he executed perfectly giving Molloy no chance.
Jack Duffy was off target with a free header from another Palfrey delivery before the visitors scored twice in two minutes.
First Keizer-Burrows headed home from a Palfrey corner then Tobon burst through the middle before firing into the bottom corner from twenty yards.
George Savage’s high tackle started some pushing and shoving and he was cautioned in the last incident before half time.
When the teams reappeared after the break, Glebe showed real intent. Hamici drew a good save from Molloy before Fred Obasa leapt at the far post to head home and reduce the arrears.
Joe Tennant came close to levelling but headed just wide from Sweeney’s free kick before the unfortunate incident on 67 minutes. Whilst Gannon was getting treatment, the referee cautioned Tennant before dismissing Nash.
When the game finally restarted, Palfrey sent substitute goalkeeper Valentin Obretenov the wrong way from the penalty spot.
However, the custodian, on debut, soon made his first saves, initially from Adem Ramadan, and then Jeffrey.
Jim Day fired over for Erith before Sweeney had a long shot saved comfortably by Molloy.
In the final minute, Charles fired wide from Jeffrey’s pass when it looked easier to score.
