Gills v Bristol Rovers Preview

Gillingham entertain Bristol Rovers at Priestfield this weekend looking to extend their seven game unbeaten run.

Back to back goalless draws in the league have seen Andy Hessenthaler’s side maintain seventh place in League Two and they will be desperate to get back to winning ways against a Rovers side that has struggled so far this season.

If The Gill s are to do it, they will have to win without Jo Kuffour who hasn’t been given permission by Rovers to play, meaning Frank Nouble is likely to come back into the starting line up for his last game in a Gills shirt before his loan spell ends and he has to return to West Ham United.

Chris Whelpdale is also pushing for a recall to the starting eleven as Gillingham look to be more adventurous than they have been in the past couple of games.

The back four picks itself after successive clean sheets with Matt Lawrence having to be content with a place on the bench, whilst Simon King will once again miss out altogether with a knee injury.

Charlie Lee is on the knife edge of having picked up nine bookings so far this season and one more would rule him out for the next two games. With the FA Cup tie against Stoke City coming up, being booked against Rovers wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world as he would serve his suspension before that game comes around.

With tickets having been sold for just £10 again, Priestfield should see yet another bumper crowd, however fans will be hoping for a better display than against Bradford City when over 7,000 were in attendance.

The Gills could line up like this for the weekend:

Flitney, Lee, Richards, Frampton, Martin, Whelpdale, J Payne, Weston, Jackman, Nouble, Kedwell.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Lawrence, Montrose, Oli, S Payne.

Meanwhile, striker Scott McGleish is a doubt for Rovers. The former Leyton Orient and Northampton forward has been struggling for several weeks with an ankle injury, but is close to a return for the Pirates.

However, the weekend trip to Kent may come too soon for the veteran forward.

Midfielder Ben Swallow is suspended for the visit to the Priestfield Stadium, as he serves the second game of a three-match ban incurred by his dismissal in the 6-1 FA Cup victory over AFC Totton earlier this month.

However, Swallow, along with Charlie Gough, has this week been told he is surplus to requirements at Rovers by manager Paul Buckle.

Experienced centre-back Adam Virgo has been ruled out for the season with knee ligament damage, while midfielder Wayne Brown (ankle) could also be unavailable for the rest of the term.
