Its been confirmed that Saturday 5th September will be the day that Gillingham will play their first competitive game since the 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland back in March in what proved to be the clubs final game of last season.
In the announcement made by the EFL on Thursday, it’s been announced that the First Round of the Carabao Cup will be played on Saturday September 5th – the draw will be live on SKY Sports next Tuesday (August 18th) – and the opening League One fixture will take place on the following Saturday (September 12th).
By then the Gills could have also played their first game in the EFL Trophy before they start their League campaign as that competition is due to start during the week of September 8th/9th – that draw will also take place on August 18th and will again include U23 sides from Premier League clubs.
An important date for Gills fans is Friday 21st August when the League One fixtures will be announced, with the season due to end on May 8th or 9th with the Play Off Final due for the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May 2021. It will be a fixture list like no other that fans have seen for many years, as it will include eleven midweek dates.
It has also been again confirmed that this season’s FA Cup will not have replays whilst the Gills will enter the competition – that starts for some of the Counties Non-League clubs on Tuesday 1st September – in the first round proper on Saturday November 7th.
