Gillingham found themselves down in the bottom half of League Two on Tuesday night after results went against them.
Having lost 2-1 to Southend United at Priestfield on Monday night, The Gills knew full well there was every chance they could find themselves slipping down the table and that turned out to be the case.
Crewe Alexandra’s 3-2 win over Burton Albion along with Rotherham United’s 1-0 win against Accrington Stanley and Port Vale picking up a point at Bradford City saw The Gills drop into the bottom half for the first time this season.
They’ll travel to Port Vale this weekend some fifteen points behind Torquay United in the last automatic promotion place and five points adrift of the play-off places, however they do have a game in hand over most of the clubs above them.
With four more games to play in February, and three of them coming at home after the Port Vale game, Gillingham will need to go on an unbeaten run if they even want to be considered as play-off hopefuls.
Automatic promotion looks well beyond their wildest dreams now, but as Jimmy Greaves once said about football – “It’s a funny old game.”
