Gillingham Football Club have announced the signing of former Charlton Athletic striker Deon Burton on a one year deal.
The 35 year old former Addicks striker has penned a deal at Priestfield that will see him with the club until the summer of 2013 and he could play some part in the pre-season friendly with Watford on Tuesday night.
Burton has spent the past couple of seasons playing the Azerbaijan league for Gabala, scoring 15 goals in 50 appearances.
He left the Addicks in the summer of 2010 after having played for them for eighteen months following his signing from Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer in January 2009.
Burton is a much travelled striker with Rotherham United, Brentford, Swindon Town, Walsall, Portsmouth, Stoke City, Barnsley, Derby County and Cardiff City his previous clubs.
It was at Derby County that he made his name after signing from Portsmouth for £1 million in the summer of 1997.
Burton turned down the offer of a six month contract at Milton Keynes Dons to sign the deal with Gillingham and is at Priestfield on Tuesday afternoon for the club’s official photos.
The striker has been training with Karl Robinson’s side for the past few weeks and had been on Milton Keynes Dons tour to the Republic of Ireland.
Gills boss Martin Allen told the club’s official wesbite:
“He’s got a great attitude, he’ll be good for our younger players and he will be good around the club.”
“This has been going on now for a good few weeks and the chairman [Paul Scally] managed to pull it off.”
“We have been after Deon for a few weeks whilst he’s been training at a Division One club,” he added.
“They offered him a deal but our chairman offered him a better deal and we are delighted he has agreed to sign for us.”
Burton is also a Jamaican international, having scored twelve times in 59 appearances, last playing for his country in 2009.
He brings the club’s compliment of experienced strikers up to four now with Danny Kedwell, Ben Strevens and Adam Birchall all competing for a place in the starting line up.
