Gills set for TV test
Gills set for TV test

The TV cameras roll into Medway tonight as Gillingham entertain Southend United live on Sky.

With no game in over two weeks now, groundstaff have moved heaven and earth to make sure the game goes ahead and Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler will be delighted to see his side make amends for recent defeats.

There is no pitch inspection planned at Priestfield and the game seems almost certain to go ahead.

If they’re going to seal all three points, they’ll have to do it without Jack Payne, Charlie Lee, Matt Fish and Simon King who are all injured.

Danny Kedwell and Gavin Tomlin had been rated as doubtful, but should be fit enough to play after overcoming the effects of a virus.

Youngster Jack Evans is expected to make his full league debut and start at right back with Lee, Fish and Barry Fuller all sidelined.

Danny Spiller resumed training last week, but the Southend game may just come a little too soon for him.

Paulo Gazzaniga will certainly get his chance to stake his claim as the club’s number one keeper after it was announced that Ross Flitney will undergo surgery on a knee injury ruling him out for the next month.

That means Daren Hawkes has been recalled from his loan spell at Maidstone United and he’ll take his place amongst the substitutes.

Therefore, The Gills could line up like this:   Gazzaniga, Evans, Essam, Frampton, Martin, Tomlin, Montrose, Weston, Jackman, Kuffour, Kedwell.   Subs: Hawkes, Richards, Lawrence, Whelpdale, Oli.

Meanwhile, Paul Sturrock has threatened to make wholesale changes when Southend head south to Kent.

The Shrimpers had their promotion push checked as they went down to a 2-0 defeat at home to Rotherham on Friday night, leaving Sturrock furious with their efforts.

“In our next game, I will pick 11 boys who listen to what I say and the others will be sat on the bench or in the stands,” he said.

Kane Ferdinand did not feature in the Southend matchday squad against the Millers and will be hoping for a return to boost Sturrock’s attacking options, as will veteran striker Neil Harris, who featured as a second-half substitute last time out.

Mark Phillips could return to the Blues defence but faces another late fitness test on his groin injury.

Knee injury trio Ryan Leonard, Barry Corr and Harry Crawford are sidelined alongside Lee Sawyer (thigh), while striker Jack Sampson’s loan from Bolton has finished.

In the words of the great Gillingham striker, Bob Taylor, who will be at the game: “To all gills fans get behind hessy and the team tonight . You don’t know how much encouragement and support helps the players. Good support breeds confidence within the team, knowing the supporters are right behind you. Moaning at players does not help a player as his  confidence will drop and will be no use to the team. You want results get behind them and be the 12th man that i  remember when i played. All the best.”

Says it all really.
