It all comes down to the final five games of the season for Gillingham as they slipped back into League One’s bottom four on Tuesday night.
Results didn’t quite go Gillingham’s way as teams around them played their games in hand.
With Morecambe having beaten Oxford United 2-1, The Gills dropped back into the relegation zone and now know that their fate is effectively out of their own hands.
AFC Wimbledon came from behind to draw 1-1 with Charlton Athletic, whilst Fleetwood Town and Lincoln City played out a 1-1 draw too.
Sitting a point behind Morecambe and Fleetwood Town, The Gills now know they have fifteen points to play for starting with Saturday’s clash with Wycombe Wanderers at Priestfield.
That could be a real challenge after Wycombe won 4-1 at Cambridge United on Tuesday night, propelling them up to sixth in the league and they will come to Kent knowing they can secure a play-off spot with a strong finish to the season.
Neil Harris can’t afford to look too far beyond the Wycombe game, but will have one eye on the two games that follow.
A visit to Cheltenham Town is followed by Fleetwood Town coming to Priestfield on Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively. A couple of wins from those two games and The Gills could well have done enough to secure their League One status for the coming season.
The Gills wrap up their campaign with a trip to Portsmouth and then at home to Rotherham United. On paper, both of those games look tough with the latter pushing for an automatic promotion place.
At the end of January, most Gillingham fans will have happily taken the situation that they find themselves in now with Neil Harris have breathed fresh air through Priestfield and now sees the side having a chance of survival having seemingly been dead and buried.
