Gillingham Football Club have issued a statement in an attempt to reassure fans that manager Steve Evans will stay with the League One side.
Rumours have been rife for the past couple of days that Evans would leave The Gills after an approach from League Two side Stevenage.
Having confirmed that approach has been turned down, Gillingham have issued the following statement:
“Further to recent media speculation the Club can confirm that Manager Steve Evans is contracted to Gillingham Football Club until June 30th 2022.”
“Whilst Stevenage F.C did make a request on Tuesday afternoon to speak with our Manager, that request was rejected.”
“We look forward to Steve leading the team for the remainder of his contract, and hopefully beyond.”
Evans confirmed on Thursday morning at his weekly press conference that he would be meeting with chairman Paul Scally this afternoon to discuss the Stevenage approach.
With just over six months left remaining on his three year contract, this may not be the end of the matter and Evans may still choose to leave Gillingham in the coming days or weeks.
Talks over a new contract and squad strengthening are understood to be two of the main talking points for Evans as he seeks to clarify his own future.
