Fans of Gillingham will be interested to know where the club are playing after the new season’s fixtures were announced, even if they can’t attend yet.
The new SKYBet League One fixtures are out and in just twenty-two days, Gillingham will start their new campaign with Hull City which means an immediate return to Priestfield for former fans favourite Tom Eaves.
Steve Evans’ side will face the Tigers on opening day – Saturday 12th September – one hundred and eighty-nine days after last season’s premature ending at the Stadium of Light on the first weekend in March.
One highlight for Gills fans will surely be the two “A2 derbies” with relegated Charlton Athletic , with the two sides first meeting at Priestfield on November 21st with the return at The Valley on February 13th.
There’s one stand-out period in October which will provide a real test with Evans’ side facing Portsmouth, Fleetwood, Ipswich, and Sunderland in an eleven-day period.
Other notable dates – at Christmas, the Gills welcome Evans’ former club Peterborough to Priestfield on Boxing Day before trips to Northampton (December 28th) and start 2021 with a trip to Plymouth on January 2nd.
Whilst at Easter, Steve Evans’ side will host relegated Wigan Athletic on Good Friday before a trip to Blackpool on Easter Monday, whilst the season will finish with the return against Plymouth at Priestfield on May 8th.
In cup competitions, we already know that the Gills will host Southend United in the Carabao Cup to open everything off on Saturday September 5th and have been drawn against, Crawley, Ipswich and Arsenal under 23s in the Football League Trophy whilst the club will enter the FA Cup at the First Round Proper stage which will be played over the weekend of 9th and 10th November.
