Gills Ladies lifted the Ryman League Cup on Thursday evening at the first time of asking after victory over Westfield Ladies in Woking.
An own goal and an Amy Taylor strike both coming in the first half were enough for the Gills to secure their second piece of silverware of the season.
The Gills were in control from the start of the game, as they maintained possession in the midfield from the off and looked to attack at every opportunity.
They took the lead in the 10th minute when a ball was whipped in and the centre half of Westfield could only watch as the ball went into the back of her own net.
It got better for the Gills in the 17th minute when a goalmouth scramble saw the ball break to Taylor who slotted home her second goal in a cup final in a week, to make it 2-0.
The only chance of the first half for Westfield saw a header from a corner easily saved by Charlotte Stephens in the Gills goal.
In truth the first half saw the Gills control the game and maintain possession without creating to many chances, but the ones they did create they made count.
Half Time 0-2
In the second half as expected the hosts came out and tried to take the game to the Gills as the home side in a cup final.
The first effort of the second half fell to Nicole Pepper who sent her shot just wide of the post from a Jade Keogh cross.
Moments later Pepper was standing over a free-kick just outside the area, she stepped up only to see her effort saved by the Westfield keeper.
Manager James Marrs then made a triple substitution brining on a whole host of experienced players for the final half hour of the game.
It was one of those substitutes Danni Farmer who had the next effort on goal when she forced the opposition keeper into a good save from her shot.
Natalie Crinean also on as a second half substitute was put through one on one with the goalkeeper but she couldn’t quite get an effort on goal.
Westfield then created their best effort of the second half but couldn’t convert the chance that would see them back into the final.
Midfielder Emma Tune had the final effort of the game as she rounded the keeper but couldn’t convert the chance from an acute angle.
The Gills were rewarded for their efforts when the final whistle blew as they brought home their second piece of silverware in a week, and are the Ryman League Cup Winners for 2013.
