Gills Ladies appoint new reserve boss

Gills Ladies have today appointed a Club legend as their new Reserve team manager.

We can reveal that Becky Lyon the clubs longest serving player has taken over the reins of the Reserve team.

Speaking about her appointment a clearly delighted Bex, said: “I am obviously very happy to have been asked and it a shame that Sean wasn’t able to continue.

“It is a great honour for me to be able to commit to the girls and hopefully move them forward.

“At the moment it is caretaker manager but I am hoping to go on and progress, enjoy it and hopefully it will turn out to be something permanent. I am not going to jump ahead of myself and I am going to take each game as it comes and see what happens.

“I want to look at the players I have got and how we can develop them. I want to give everyone a chance to show what they can do and hopefully it won’t take long to see some improvements.

“We have had some good results this season so far, but it shouldn’t be long before we are pushing teams like Arsenal in every game. All the girls in the team play with a great passion and I want to be a part of that and help them to start pushing up the League.”

Chairman Martin Andrews was also extremely pleased that Bex has taken up the challenge of management.

He said:” It gives me great pleasure to offer Becky the role of Reserve team manager, and I am delighted she has accepted the role. Becky is the longest serving player at Gillingham LFC, and although she doesn’t have the necessary coaching qualifications, she has the attributes and experience of playing to become a top coach.

“The Reserves have had a tough start to the season and they desperately need someone to stabilise them. Alongside Bex I am delighted that Paul Merritt has accepted the opportunity to become Head Coach for the Reserves, his experience and knowledge will be vital to Becky and the Reserve team as we aim to develop players that will hopefully push towards the first team.

“I am sure First team manager Ian Varley will also help and give Becky as much advice as possible, as ultimately the reserves are here to supplement the first team.

“I am proud to introduce Bex as my first female coaching appointment and urge all players, staff and supporters to give her their full support; we will work with her to get her coaching badges in the near future.”
