Gillingham Ladies rampage on the league continued as they secured another convincing victory beating a tough Portsmouth outfit 3-0.Jade Keogh

An entertaining encounter from the off, Gills Ladies got off the mark with a fantastic goal from top scorer Charlotte Gurr.

Gills skipper Jay Blackie showed great determination to steal possession back for her side before producing a great ball to infiltrate the Portsmouth backline. Her pass fell perfectly into the path of Gurr, who sharply turned her marker to release a powerful shot that rocketed over the outstretched keeper’s gloves.

Gillingham’s aggressive 3-5-2 formation made for some great attacking play for fans to enjoy, producing several opportunities for the home side to expand upon their impressive goal scoring form at Chatham FC.

Meanwhile, the defensive trio, Rachel Ahern, Deanna Cooper and Amy Taylor, marshalled by keeper Faye Baker defended smartly to compress Portsmouth’s attacking threat to the point Baker was rarely called into action over the 90 minutes.

Jade Keogh grabbed Gills second of the game with a fantastic solo goal which replicated her goal from last weekend’s visit from Tottenham Ladies. Picking up the ball from the half way line, Keogh drove down the left wing before cutting the ball inside and producing a brilliant shot which floated into the back of the net.

The game continued to be a fierce contest into the second half as both teams pressured play. The battles in midfield proved to swing momentum and it was midfielder Blackie who scored Gills third at a crucial time in the game.

Lisa Fulgence caused Portsmouth trouble in the box and managed to flick the ball amongst a sea of defenders to the Gills skipper who dispatched the effort with a sweet volley on the edge of the box. The ball flew into the top right hand corner leaving the Portsmouth keeper with no chance.

Both teams continued to press and it looked like Gills had pinched a fourth after some great work from Fliss Gibbons who pinged a shot on goal for Lauren Williams to toe poke it. The offside flag denied Gills however.

Nevertheless, another pleasing afternoon for Gills Ladies fans who see their side top of the league for a fifth week running with an impressive 13 points out of a possible 15 collected.
