Gills Ladies got their first home win of the season on Sunday afternoon when they beat visitors Millwall Lionesses 2-1.

Vicky Ashton-Jones scored in either half to give the Gills a 2-0 lead before Snezona Malasevic pulled one back for the Gills.

In the third minute Vicky Ashton-Jones got away from her marker and flew down the wing forcing a corner. Danni Farmer swung the corner into the area, the clearance found the Gills captain again but her shot was blocked.

On seven minutes Danni Farmer swung a free-kick into the Millwall area, it fell to Sarah Jones who fired a shot goal wards, but it was straight the goalkeeper.

The intervening period became a battle of the midfields with the Gills having the better of the possession but there were no real chances for either side.

In the 24th minute substitute Laura East was played into space by Danni Farmer, the midfield raced through on goal but fired her shot at the Millwall keeper.

With 30 minutes on the clock Lauren Phillips was fouled and Danni Farmer sent the free-kick into the box but it was straight at the keeper.

A minute later however and the Gills were 1-0 up, a long ball out of the defence set Vicky Ashton-Jones away and she slotted the ball into the net under the keeper.

Millwall almost found the back of their own net in the 36th minute when Cally Beaumant went close with a clearing header from a Gills free-kick.

On the stroke of half time a pass from Sarah Jones set Vicky Ashton-Jones away again but this time her shot was straight at the keeper.

Half time 1-0

The second half saw Millwall Lionesses getting more into the game to tray and put pressure on the Gills defence.

The first chance of the half fell to Millwall with a well work move that saw the Millwall winger fire just wide.

It took until the hour mark before there was another effort on goal of any note and it came for the Gills and resulted in their second goal of the game. Deanna Cooper played a great ball out from the back and found Vicky Ashton-Jones in space once again, and she raced into the area and calmly slotted home goal number two of the afternoon to make it 2-0.

Millwall were back in the game just five minutes later when Snezona Malasevic hit an unbelievable shot into the top corner from 30 yards to make it 3-1. They went close shortly after from a corner but saw the ball go just wide of Sarah Quantrill’s far post.

Lauren Phillips headed straight at the Millwall keeper in the 77th minute from a Danni Farmer corner.

In the 90th minute the Gills turned defence into attack when Deanna Cooper picked the ball up in her own area, she raced away and fired the ball forwards. Vicky Ashton-Jones gave chase and challenged the keeper only to see the ball trickle past the far post.

The final whistle blew and the Gills had their first win since the opening day of the season to move up the League table.
