Gills fate in their own hands

Gillingham’s fate this season is very much back in their own hands after results went their way on Tuesday night.

Ady Pennock’s side have just five games left to play this season, but sit just two points above the League One relegation zone.

However, both Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town lost on Tuesday night, preventing The Gills from dropping into the bottom four.

With both sides having had games in hand on The Gills, it was imperative for the Kent club that they didn’t go into Saturday’s game against Millwall at Priestfield sitting in the relegation places.

Ironically, Shrewsbury Town lost 2-1 at home to Millwall last night, whilst Port Vale went down 3-0 at play-off chasing Rochdale and have slipped down the table below The Gills on goals scored, although both have the same goal difference.

The importance of picking up a result against rivals Millwall on Saturday can’t be stressed enough now for a Gillingham side that has lost their last four games.

Neil Harris’ side will come to Priestfield full of confidence as they too push for a play-off place.

Looking beyond the Millwall game, Pennock’s side entertain Bristol Rovers on Good Friday before making the short trip to The Valley on Bank Holiday Monday to face an under performing Charlton Athletic side.

They’ll then end this league campaign with Fleetwood Town coming to Priestfield on Saturday 22nd April before their last game of the season at Northampton Town on Sunday 30th April.

Ironically, the Cobblers are managed by former Gills boss Justin Edinburgh and he won’t be looking to do any favours for his former side.

These next 25 days will be crucial for a Gillingham side that sits on the cusp of another season in League One or relegation to football’s fourth tier.
