Gillingham manager Neil Harris has added to his squad with the capture of former Republic of Ireland international midfielder, Shaun Williams.
The 35-year-old, who has worked with the Gills boss before during his time with Millwall, becomes the club’s second summer arrival, accompanying Will Wright who has joined Gillingham from Dagenham & Redbridge in the last ten days.
Williams, who has also played for Portsmouth and MK Dons, is a former Republic of Ireland international and operates in a defensive midfield position.
He has played close to 500 games in all competitions during his career and won promotion to the Championship while with Millwall via the play-offs in 2017. He was voted MK Dons’ “Player of the Year” in 2012-13, and also won the “Players’ Player of the Year” award.
Shaun played 35 games for Pompey last season in all competitions, starting in the 1-0 win over Gillingham at Priestfield in November 2021.
After signing his contract at ME7, Shaun said: “I am really pleased to be here; I’m excited at the opportuntiy ahead and I’m grateful to be working with Neil and David again.
“I’m a controlled kind of player, I like to get on the ball and I like to do what I can for the team. I don’t want any headlines, I like to go under the radar. I’m looking forward to getting going.”
Manager Neil Harris added: “I am delighted to get Shaun Williams within the group; an experienced player that I’ve worked with in the past. I know the characteristics that Shaun will bring to the dressing room, but also the pitch.
“He provides a calming influence, on and off the pitch, he is a leader in the changing room. He is a very, very intelligent Footballer, and quality player at the level.”
