Gillingham manager Martin Allen is still undecided who will captain his side for the season ahead.
Midfielder Charlie Lee was handed the captain’s armband on Saturday for the 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at Priestfield, with Danny Kedwell, Danny Jackman and Adam Birchall all having worn it throughout pre-season.
One person that seems out of the frame is last season’s skipper, Andy Frampton, who is struggling to hold down a regular place under Allen.
However, Allen has confirmed Frampton will be club captain for the forthcoming season, providing the link between the players and management.
With Frampton seemingly out of the frame for the job on the pitch, Allen admitted that Lee was one of the candidates for the position:
“Charlie Lee has showed great commitment, I’ve really enjoyed working with him, he’s funny and the players really enjoy his company.” he told the club’s official website.
“He was captain aswell which was nice for him and we will see how that one pans out. I’ve told everybody that Andy Frampton will be our club captain – he’s great around the club, a good left footed centre half who is great at the training ground and when he’s fully fit he is an asset.”
Allen has always kept his cards close to his chest when it comes to key decisions ahead of the new season and this is one that will keep fans guessing for another week.
