Gillingham have announced the signing of midfielder Daniel Adshead on loan from Premier League side Norwich City for the rest of the season.
The 19 year old former Rochdale midfielder joins Steve Evans’ side ahead of their League One clash against Morecambe on Saturday and is expected to go straight into the starting line up for The Gills.
Adshead joined The Canaries in the summer of 2019 from Rochdale for an undisclosed fee, but has yet to make his league debut for his new side, instead going out on loan to Dutch second-tier side SC Telstar for the 2020/21 season, making 28 appearances.
A creative, box to box midfielder, Adshead isn’t quite the new striker some Gillingham fans would have been hoping for, but he will add depth to a very depleted squad and will be with The Gills until the end of the current campaign.
The addition of Adshead will come as huge boost to Evans and The Gills as their injury hit, threadbare squad have struggled at the start of the new campaign, taking just two points from a possible nine in League One.
Adshead is an England Under 18 and Under 19 international and is widely regarded to have a great future in the game.
On capturing his signature, Steve Evans said: “Dan is a very talented lad with great energy.”
“He was outstanding in Holland and during his time at Rochdale he was sought after by a number of clubs.”
“I would like to acknowledge the support of Stuart Webber, my friend Daniel Farke, and all at Norwich City for their help in making this deal happen”.
The signing of Adshead could be the only business coming into Priestfield over the coming weeks with manager Steve Evans having admitted there is nothing left in the budget to make more signings unless players leave.
Striker John Akinde has turned down a move to League Two side Bristol Rovers, whilst Christian Maghoma is still out of favour and yet to find a new club.
Adshead will wear the number 16 shirt during his time with The Gills.
