Gillingham vs Oxford United – Preview

Gillingham will look to put aside their final game of 2016 and start the New Year with a win against fellow mid table side Oxford.

Following their tough 2-1 loss at Millwall on Friday night, the Gills will seek revenge for their 1-0 loss at the Kassam Stadium in November when Marvin Johnson’s goal separated the sides.

Gillingham will start 2017 in 16th position in League One, a comfortable nine points above the relegation places. Justin Edinburgh’s men remain one point away from their opponents on Monday who travel to north Kent in 13th.

Three points could see Gillingham overtake up to five teams, including Charlton and Oxford.

Priestfield has been somewhat of a fortress for the Gills this season. They have only lost two home matches all season and remain unbeaten at the ground since the 2-1 loss against Oldham in early October. There hasn’t been a game at Priestfield this season where they’ve failed to score.

This could change on Monday, however. Paul Konchesky and Bradley Dack’s red cards against Millwall mean they’ll miss the opening game of the New Year.

Oxford come into the game in impressive form. United have only lost twice since the start of November. However, their away record is something to consider for Gills fans as the Us have only won two games on the road all season.

The visitors, much like Gillingham, could reach 11th place in League One of they are to take all three points back to Oxfordshire.
