Gillingham vs Newport County – Preview

Gillingham will be desperate to end their run of four successive defeats when they host Newport County this evening.

Mark Bonner will be keen to see that his side do not make it five on the spin, as they return to the MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

The Gills have gone from top spot to sixth in the last four games, and will need to find that winning formula to keep pace with the sides above them.

Jayden Clarke gave the Gills the lead against Bradford City on Saturday afternoon, only for the hosts to hit back with two goals and take the three points.

It was a game that saw the Gills manager make a number of changes with Jake Turner returning in goal. Conor Masterson came into the centre of defence, Joe Gbode was handed a start on the wing and Oli Hawkins getting a rare start up front.

With that not working on Saturday it will be interesting to see what the Gills manager does with the starting eleven against Newport this evening.

The exiles themselves go into the game on the back of a three game losing streak themselves. They lost at the weekend three-nil at home to Chesterfield and currently sit 15th in the league.

They have scored two more goals in the League than the Gills, but have conceded 24 goals compared to the nine of Gillingham.

The Gills have not lost three games in a row at home since December 2022, and Newport have lost nine of their last ten games on the road.
