Gillingham v Stockport County preview

Gillingham will face no sterner test this season than this evening when league leaders Stockport County come to Priestfield.

Stephen Clemence’s side go into the game knowing they really need to get back to winning ways after Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Newport County.

That toothless display saw The Gills drop to 11th place in League Two, but are crucially only the one points outside the top seven and this round of fixtures could be crucial come the end of the season.

On Saturday, Clemence opted to change personnel and formation after a great win against Notts County and a battling draw against Swindon Town.

Clemence must now decide who he starts with this evening in a game that is starting to look like a must win, or certainly a must not lose.

Defeat and The Gills will really be pulled into mid table obscurity and with Wrexham coming to Kent at the weekend, the tests don’t get any easier.

Without striker Jorge Hurtado, seemingly out for some time and possibly until the end of the season, Gillingham will also be without new signing Josh Andrews, so Clemence will have to juggle who starts up front with Oli Hawkins, Ashley Nadesan and Josh Walker fighting it out for one or two places.

Whoever does get the nod from Clemence, the fans will be hoping that they put in more of a battling display than that shown at Newport where Gillingham didn’t look like scoring.

In a season that has seen many highs and lows already, tonight could really be a campaign defining clash with Stockport County looking to push for promotion.
