Gillingham go into Tuesday night’s game against Shrewsbury Town at Priestfield sitting bottom of the league and could make history.
It could be an historic moment come the end of the game, but not one that Gillingham will be proud of should they be unable to win.
Saturday’s 3-2 loss at Wigan Athletic means The Gills have now gone fifteen games without a win, equalling a record set back in 1972, some fifty years ago!
Lose or draw on Tuesday night and the Kent side will have made history for all the wrong reasons.
The last time Gillingham fans saw their side win was against Doncaster Rovers in the league clash at Priestfield way back on Tuesday 19th October. Over three months on and the wait for another goes on and on.
Despite having come back from two goals down on Saturday, Gillingham conceded a woeful third allowing Wigan to go top of the table, whilst the Kent side sunk to the bottom.
With Steve Lovell seemingly set to be in charge for the foreseeable future after Andy Woodman intimated that he would be staying at Bromley, the former manager needs to find the right combination to conjure up three crucial points.
On Saturday, Lovell brought both Charlie Kelman and Ben Reeves off the bench to provide more cutting edge and it had an almost instant impact, but Wigan went through the gears at the end of the game to claim the three points.
Since returning from QPR, Kelman seems to be much higher up the pecking order at Priestfield than on loan Norwich City striker Tom Dickson-Peters with the 19 year old not even in the eighteen man squad at the weekend.
Having confessed he hadn’t seen enough of the talented teenager, Lovell opted to have Gerald Sithole on the bench for the weekend, but will welcome back midfielder Dan Phillips for Tuesday night’s game after the on loan Watford dynamo served the second of his two game ban following his sending off against Ipswich Town.
With an almost fully fit squad in which to choose from, Lovell has an abundance of his riches at his disposal, something former manager Steve Evans rarely had in this campaign, so it’s time for the players to stop the excuses and start matching their ambition with performances.
However, Reeves will be assessed before the game having both come on and off at Wigan with a niggle.
Shrewsbury Town come to Priestfield with some needle between the two sides earlier in the season. The Shrews came out 2-1 winners in the clash in Shropshire way back in August, with the game ending in a melee that saw both clubs charged for their conduct.
Those that do attend Priestfield on Tuesday night will be hoping for some more blood and thunder, but it could be a lacklustre crowd as many seem set to opt to stay at home in the warm than potentially see history being made.
