Gillingham v Sheffield Wednesday preview

Gillingham face a daunting task on Saturday when a well supported Sheffield Wednesday come to Priestfield for the League One clash.

Over 4,000 Owls fans are expected to pack into Priestfield, outnumbering the home fans with both sides needing the points, but for very different reasons.

The Gills, who lost 1-0 at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night, will still be without Daniel Phillips for Sheffield Wednesday’s visit.

The Watford loanee serves the final match of a three-game ban after being sent off for the third time this campaign in the defeat to Bolton Wanderers on March 5th.

Robbie McKenzie will miss out after coming off in the second half at Charlton in midweek, with boss Neil Harris confirming he will be sidelined for “weeks” with a quad strain.

David Tutonda will be assessed, while goalkeeper Aaron Chapman is pushing to return to the starting eleven with Pontus Dahlberg at fault for Charlton’s goal at The Valley.

Harris will be hoping that Charlie Kelman is fit enough to start alongside Vadaine Oliver as The Gills go in search of three points that could lift them out of the bottom four.

With Harris limited on options, the Gillingham manager will be hoping that the free scoring Wednesday side have an off day in Kent this weekend.

Chey Dunkley could make his first appearance of 2022 when Wednesday do visit Priestfield Stadium.

The defender was named in the squad for the midweek 1-1 draw with Accrington after recovering from his hamstring injury but did not come off the bench.

Tuesday’s game saw fellow defender Dominic Iorfa make his first start since October 23 following a lengthy lay-off, and it remains to be seen whether he will keep his place.

Harlee Dean and Josh Windass are among those closing in on returns, along with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, with all three back in training.

With Wednesday sitting just outside the play-off places, the game is vitally important for both sides and is expected to be a lively spring affair.
