Gillingham will look to build on their back to back home wins when Plymouth Argyle come to Kent on Saturday.
Neil Harris’ arrival at Priestfield has seen a real upturn in the fortunes for The Gills as they look to pull themselves out of the League One relegation zone.
Having overseen two wins, a draw and a defeat in his four games in charge, the former Millwall and Cardiff City manager has created a real buzz around the club, but Saturday’s game could be one of their toughest.
Plymouth travel up from the South West, blown all the way by Storm Eunice and they will be hoping to head back to Devon with a rare win in Kent.
Gillingham go into the game with a whole week of training under their belts after last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Morecambe and having won their two previous encounters at Priestfield, beating both Cambridge United and Crewe Alexandra 1-0.
With that renewed sense of optimism flowing through the club, Harris will be hoping his side can pick up another massive three points.
Speaking at his weekly press conference on Thursday afternoon, the Gillingham manager admitted his side were in for a tough test, but one that they could overcome:
“Plymouth have done great this season, they have some dangerous players and we need to be at our best. The fans have been monumental. I know when there is harmony between the terraces and the pitch here, this is a tough place to come.”
“Tactically we have tried to implement some ideas. It is just drip feeding the start of a process over a long period, and trying to give the guys more ideas.”
“This week has given us an opportunity to carry out some extended sessions, get to know personalities and take stock.”
“Ben Reeves has been back on the grass, we’ll see if Saturday is too soon. Muzzy (Carayol) has had a setback, he’s got an ankle ligament problem. He won’t be available this weekend. We have to be adaptable.”
It’s likely that Harris will go into the game that started against Morecambe, however the manager may be tempted to partner Charlie Kelman with Vadaine Oliver this weekend.
Plymouth Argyle go into the game sitting sixth in League One having won their last three games and they will be looking to build on that recent form that’s see the club from Devon climb into the play-off places.
Gillingham however start the game 22nd in the league, some five points from safety, but their recent form has seen them move closer to those above them and there is now a lot more hope than there was three weeks ago, just before Harris was appointed.
A win this weekend and Gillingham fans will dare to dream.
