Gillingham v Leyton Orient preview

Gillingham entertain champions elect Leyton Orient at Priestfield this evening with both sides wanting the points, but for different reasons.

Whilst The O’s come to Medway looking to all but wrap up the League Two title, starting the game ten points clear of second placed Northampton Town, The Gills know a win will guarantee another season in the Football League.

Two of the league’s in form teams collide and Gillingham know full well that they can mix it with the best of them after holding promotion chasing Stockport County to a 1-1 draw at Priestfield on Saturday.

On another day, Neil Harris’ side could have taken all three points having taken the lead through George Lapslie’s drive in the 54th minute only to see the visitors grab an equaliser in the 89th.

Chances came at both ends on Saturday, but The Gills could count themselves unfortunate with some the refereeing decisions that went against them and on another day, could have easily taken all three points against a very strong Stockport side.

Leyton Orient will come to Priestfield this evening full of confidence, backed by a large travelling support and with one eye on both promotion, but also claiming the league title.

A win for each side could mean so much – The Gills could secure another season in League Two, whilst Leyton Orient could in theory win the league at Priestfield.

A lot will hinge on results elsewhere, but both teams will be focused on their own performance.

On Saturday, Gillingham were missing striker Oli Hawkins and had to make do with Tom Nichols playing a lone role up front with George Lapslie playing in the hole behind him.

This worked reasonable well, more so in the second half when Stockport went for the win, but Neil Harris will be hoping he has Hawkins back available following illness.

Also missing on Saturday was Aiden O’Brien and he will be hoping to have overcome a knock to take his place in the squad.

With just four games left to play for The Gills this season and this being the penultimate home match for the Kent side, many players are playing for the futures, whilst the fans will be hoping for a strong end to the campaign that could go a long way to setting the tone for the summer a possible promotion push next season.
