Gillingham v Doncaster Rovers preview

Gillingham won’t have a better chance to register three points in League One when bottom side Doncaster Rovers come to Priestfield this evening.

Under the shadow of Saturday’s protests before, during and after the game against Sunderland, tension is building behind the scenes with a section of fans calling for chairman Paul Scally to sell up.

The Gillingham owner has insisted the club would likely be in administration should he walk away, but the fact remains the whole saga is a massive distraction to what goes on at matchdays.

Fans have called off any planned protests for the Doncaster game, but that doesn’t rule out a section of fans having their say at Priestfield.

Back to the football and Steve Evans will be desperate to get his side back to winning ways and the side will have a great chance against a Doncaster Rovers side that’s had a poor start to the season.

Without David Tutonda and Alex MacDonald for a number of weeks, the Gillingham squad almost picks itself, although it was a welcome surprise to see both Mustapha Carayol and Ryan Jackson restored to the starting line up at the weekend.

Jack Tucker was pushed forward into a holding midfield role and it almost worked against a very strong Sunderland side.

On paper, the Gillingham side should have too much for a Doncaster side that looks very fragile, but the distractions off the pitch may start to have a bearing on how the side play.

It feels like tonight’s game could be huge in so many ways.
