Gillingham v Colchester United preview

Gillingham will look to give new manager Gareth Ainsworth his first win as Colchester United come to Priestfield this evening.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Harrogate Town saw The Gills come from behind to claim a precious point with Max Clark having scored from the penalty spot.

This evening, The Gills will be looking to go one better and claim a much needed win in front of a Priestfield crowd that hasn’t been entertained an awful lot this season.

Captain Armani Little is once again expected to be missing the game through suspension after picking up his tenth yellow card of the season.

Little’s place in the starting eleven was taken by Jonny Williams at Harrogate and Ainsworth must now decide whether he sticks with the side that started on Saturday or make changes to freshen things up.

Yet again on Saturday, Gillingham lacked that cutting edge and goals have proven to be a real cause for concern this season.

With fans hoping for a more attacking brand of football to watch, they will be hoping Ainsworth takes the handbrake off and allows his side to take Colchester United on.

Playing on the front foot hasn’t been Gillingham’s style this season and have looked to keep things tight at the back, but that hasn’t paid dividends as The Gills sit 19th in League Two.

Whoever Ainsworth starts with this evening, every Gillingham player is playing for their future.

With so many out of contract in the summer and Ainsworth keen to bring in players that will play to his style, these remaining weeks of the season are their chance to show they deserve to be at Priestfield come August.

Colchester United will be no pushover though as they go into the game sitting 8th in the league and have ambitions to make the play-offs.

Games between the two sides in recent years have been less than predictable, but the form guide suggests the away side will have the upper hand.

With Gareth Ainsworth calling on the Rainham End to bring plenty of noise this evening, tonight could be the start of the new Gillingham era under the fifth manager of the Galinson regime.
