Gillingham v Accrington Stanley preview

Gillingham will be looking to get back to winning ways when they entertain Accrington Stanley at Priestfield on Tuesday evening.

Steve Evans’ side will be keen to put Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Doncaster Rovers behind them and seal another three League One points with the game to kick off at 5:30pm.

Jacob Mellis is likely to miss out, although he will be given every chance to feature, with Jordan Graham only expected to be risked if fully fit.

Trae Coyle and Zech Medley are both in contention to start the game after coming off the bench against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, whilst Josh Eccles is also pushing for a start as Evans looks for a winning combination.

Speaking ahead of the game on Monday, Evans was hoping to have some more players available after a raft of injuries in recent weeks:

“This will be a really tough encounter. Accrington are a quality team with good players and have started the season impressively.”

“Jacob will need more training and match minutes to get up to speed but should be available. Jordan, we will see how he is on the grass tomorrow, but if there’s any doubt then he’s out.”

Meanwhile, skipper Kyle Dempsey is looking for a reaction from his side:

“For us, for the fans’ sake, we want to put things right on Tuesday. We have to have a real go.”

“We have to give one-hundred-and-ten percent against Accrington and show the fans what we are about. We need a performance with commitment and desire. We need to put it right and get the three points.”

“We have to show the mentality and the focus to get back to winning ways. Negativity only leads to negativity; we have to stay positive and then positive things will happen.”

Gillingham go into the game sitting 12th in the League One table, six points outside the play-off places, with their opponents starting the game 10th and three points better off.

A win will be just the tonic for a Gillingham side that have been consistently inconsistent.

Accrington Stanley? Who are they anyway?
