After a shocking run of form that’s seen Gillingham embedded in the League One relegation zone, the club have announced the departure of manager Steve Evans.
It can come to no real surprise to many Gills fans that the club have looked to replace their manager at this stage of the season after a poor run of results culminating in the 4-0 loss at home to Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon.
Joining him out of the door at Priestfield is his Assistant Manager, Paul Raynor, with the pair having delivered two top ten finishes in recent seasons, but this campaign has been poor at best.
A statement released by the club on Sunday afternoon reads:
“Gillingham Football Club can confirm that the contract of Manager Steve Evans has been terminated by mutual consent with immediate effect.“
“The Club wishes to thank Steve for all his efforts over the past two years in circumstances that have been significantly more difficult and challenging due to the Covid pandemic, and wishes him well in the future.”
“His assistant, Paul Raynor, will also be leaving the Club.”
“The search for a new Head Coach/Manager will begin immediately.”
“There will be no further comment from the Club on this matter.”
KSN understands former Gills midfielder Neil Smith is favourite to take over the reins at Priestfield.
Former Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler is also believed to be in the frame for a third spell in charge at the club, but is currently employed by Dover Athletic and a compensation deal would have to be agreed, whilst Neil Smith is out of work after leaving Bromley Football Club.
A return to the club for the likes of Steve Lovell, Darren Hare and Nicky Southall can’t also be ruled out after they’ve all maintained a good relationship with the club.
Gillingham currently sit 22nd in League One, some seven points from safety and their next game is at home to Burton Albion on Saturday 15th January.
A large section of Gills fans have vented their anger at chairman Paul Scally in recent months and the departure of Evans won’t stop the protests at Priestfield for the owner to now stand aside, sell up and allow someone else to take the club forward.
